INDIANAPOLIS — The NTT IndyCar Series gets a chance to catch its breath this weekend.
Following Monday’s rain-delayed Borchetta Bourbon Music City Grand Prix at Nashville Superspeedway, the series is idle before returning Aug. 9 for the BITNILE.com Grand Prix of Portland at Portland International Raceway. The event begins the final six-race stretch of the 2026 championship and shifts the focus back to road-course racing after Nashville’s lone midsummer oval.
The break comes after another statement performance from Alex Palou, who led the final 95 laps to earn his series-leading fifth victory of the season Monday. The Chip Ganassi Racing driver held off defending Nashville winner Josef Newgarden by 0.8731 seconds, while David Malukas charged from 25th on the grid to finish third.
Palou’s victory extended his championship lead to 83 points with six races remaining, putting the four-time defending series champion firmly in control entering the West Coast swing.
When the series returns, the challenge changes dramatically.
Nashville rewarded oval racing precision, tire management and patience over 225 laps. Portland, a 1.964-mile permanent road course, demands heavy braking, technical cornering and strategic execution through its 12-turn layout. The circuit has become one of the series’ premier road-course venues and often plays a pivotal role in the championship chase.
For teams, the off week provides valuable time to reset, analyze data and prepare for the run to the Astor Challenge Cup. For Palou, it offers an opportunity to savor another victory before attempting to strengthen his title bid on familiar road-course terrain.
